NAME OF BUSINESS: SWEET DIABETIC SHOP
A BIT ABOUT SWEET DIABETIC SHOP:
My business is a family oriented one that started because of my family’s long history of Diabetes.
The Sweet Diabetic Shop offers a wide range of products that cater for diabetics who want to eat a little snack without the regrets of raising their blood sugar and causing more diabetic complications that come from the consumption of too much cane sugar, lack of exercise and diet.
PRODUCTS / SERVICES OFFERED:
Some of our products are as follow: Cheesecakes, cupcakes, Jams, cake mix, syrups, Juice on the go, Marshmallow, gummy bears and soon we will be introducing much more.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?
This is a new business that was launched to the public in May 2019, but planning behind the scenes took two years. A lot of research was put into this venture because I had to be sure the Trinidad and Tobago market was ready for these products and for closet diabetics to feel free to come out and let others know they have the illness and understand that there is hope for them in terms of eating something they like.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ENTREPRENEURIAL CHALLENGE?
My biggest challenge thus far is people taking a chance on ordering our goods online. We have had a few people order from us online but majority of our followers want a physical location. I am looking into that but for the first year of this business I am focused on getting the word out about our products and services.
DESCRIBE YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY IN ONE WORD?
This journey is SLOW.
WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO NEW ENTREPRENEURS?
My humble advice to anyone trying to get into this field of owning their own business is “go with God and do a lot of research before you spend on any business”.
WHAT ENTREPRENEURIAL REGRETS DO YOU HAVE?
One of my deepest regrets was that I purchased too much products to start off with.
WHAT SKILLS DO YOU THINK ENTREPRENEURS NEED IN ORDER TO GROW THEIR BUSINESS?
To grow any business an owner must promote, advertise, make friends, understand the market and do research on their products to keep it as relevant as possible.
HOW DO YOU THINK AN ENTREPRENEUR CAN HANDLE REJECTION FROM POTENTIAL CLIENTS?
Entrepreneurs have to understand that rejection is a part of every aspect of life and in business it’s even worse, but if you have a strong foundation of people that will keep you grounded and listen to you when you need to vent or ask questions, that will surely help. It is important that your circle is small and strong.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR BUSINESS IN 5 YEARS?
In the next five years I see myself as a business owner with seven businesses that can reach the international market and stay there for my future generations to come.
WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVATION?
I am motivated by my firm family oriented nature, morals and by my vision to see the diabetic community have things in every grocery and mini mart that they can partake in without being and feeling sick.
